Celebrating the NDR Elbphilharmonie’s 75th Anniversary

21cmediagroup / 26th October 2020 / News

Starting on October 30, Alan Gilbert conducts two concerts celebrating the 75th anniversary of the NDR Elbphilharmonie. 75 years ago, on October 30, 1945, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt led the orchestra in its first concert, which featured Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture, Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, as well as Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony. 75 years later to the day, violinist Julia Fischer and cellist Daniel Müller-Schott join the orchestra and Alan in celebrating this anniversary with a concert featuring exactly the same repertoire. The next day, Alan reflects on the past 75 years in an intimate livestreamed conversation with Tom Morris, former CEO of The Cleveland Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra, and former NDR Elbphilharmonie conductor Christoph von Dohnányi. The anniversary weekend concludes on November 1 with a concert featuring Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto performed by Frank Peter Zimmermann as well as an encore of Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony.
