As Alan prepares to launch his eighth season as Chief Conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in September, the partnership turns to the fourth and final symphony of composer Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856). The recording, captured in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie in September 2021—the already iconic venue celebrates its own tenth anniversary this season—features one of Romantic composers most gripping scores. “Everything is entirely natural, nothing is arbitrarily imposed” is how Johannes Brahms praised the work, which was conceived as a “symphonic fantasy”. Indeed, Schumann realized this idea to perfection here: everything is either the result of the past or a hint at the future.
