What does music mean, the question of racism in Gershwin’s opera “Porgy & Bess” and Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony? These are just some of the topics covered by Alan Gilbert and Mikhail Paweletz in the international “about music” podcast in English.
Alan Gilbert and Mikhail Pavelets. One is a conductor, the other a news presenter. Two different worlds. But what unites them is their love of classical music and their instrument: the violin. “It became clear to me early enough that I would not make it to the top of the world as a violinist. I felt that conducting suited my temperament, talents and abilities better,” says Gilbert, Principal Conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra . Even if Paweletz now has little to do with music professionally as a presenter at the Tagesschau, he takes out his violin several times a week. “I love practicing scales. It’s like meditating,” he says.
In the NDR’s “about music” podcast, the two talk about their fascination with classical music, discuss important social issues and exchange views on what all of this has to do with them personally.
